Momentum Safety was very proud to have our Principal Consultant Michael Terry sit on the expert panel at the recent Australian Association for the Manual Handling of People (AAMHP) ‘Innovations and Improvements’ workshop held in Brisbane, QLD. Michael was invited to contribute to the panel discussion on current industry trends and directions as an expert in community care. Here is what he has to share about the experience:

“It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to sit with colleagues and share the strengths and challenges that people working in community care encounter when handling their clients. It was not a surprise to hear that there are a lot of similar challenges that people face across the health, aged and disability sectors. There is great work being done to enable care staff to work safely and prevent injuries to themselves and their clients, but it is clear there is still a long way to go. This is especially true within community care.

We are seeing more and more complex, high needs clients being cared for in their own home or supported independent living houses, and working in these settings poses its own unique set of challenges for staff. It’s really important for providers to stay up to date and be in tune with the needs of their staff and clients. Appropriate training, advice, and ongoing support is essential in order to care for staff as well as they care for their clients.”

How would you sum up your conference experience, Michael?

“It was fantastic to share ideas with like-minded colleagues, and have the chance to play with some new people handling equipment that is available to ease people handling burden and reduce injury rates. I look forward to sharing these updates with our clients!”

Keep up the great work Michael!

We look forward to sharing some of his pearls of wisdom from the AAMHP workshop in the coming weeks.
